4 × 8 m pool: the balance between swimming and play
A 4×8 m pool has 32 m² of water: about 32 m³ with 1.10 m panels or 45 m³ with 1.50 m panels. The 8 m length allows proper strokes and the 4 m width allows play, which is why it is the classic size for a detached house.
Why it became the "classic" size
8 m is roughly the length at which swimming starts to feel like swimming: you take a few proper strokes before turning. The 4 m width leaves room for a ball, floats and children jumping in from the edge without getting in the way of whoever is swimming. And at 32 m² the pool stays comfortably below the 50 m² limit.
Water and depth
- Water surface: 32 m².
- 1.10 m panels: water level about 1.0 m, volume about 32 m³.
- 1.50 m panels: water level about 1.4 m, volume about 45 m³.
The difference of about 13 m³ is water you will fill, heat and treat with chemicals every year. If there are young children in the house, 1.10 m is usually more practical; if there are teenagers or adults who want to swim without touching the bottom, 1.50 m. The comparison is covered in pool depth.
Who it suits
The 4×8 suits a family of four to six who want a pool for all ages: children who are growing up and will use it for years, friends at weekends, a parent who swims before work. The practical side of family use, from shade to safety, is covered in the family pool.
Skimmer or overflow
A skimmer works well in pools up to about 60 m², so at 32 m² a skimmer pool is the simple and reliable solution, with a compact plant room for the small-scale works approval. An overflow design is chosen mainly for its looks, with the water level with the paving. In that case an overflow grating about 25 cm wide runs around the edge and a balance tank is needed; your engineer will confirm how these fit within the conditions of the approval.
Planning the plot
- Paving about 1.2 m wide all round: the pool with its paving takes up about 6.5×10.5 m.
- A strip of about 2.5 m on the long side that gets the most sun, for four loungers.
- A table with a pergola on the short side facing the house, so whoever is sitting there can see the children in the water.
- A shower on the way from the house and a compact plant room a few metres further on, behind plants.
