4 × 10 m pool: when you want both swimming and company
A 4×10 m pool has 40 m² of water, about 40 m³ with 1.10 m panels or 56 m³ with 1.50 m panels. The 10 m length makes swimming real, and the surface stays below 50 m².
One pool, two uses at the same time
What you gain at 10 m is not just more strokes per length. In practice the pool splits into two zones: at one end, by the steps, the children play and those who just want to cool off sit; along the opposite side there is a lane for anyone who wants to swim continuously. In a smaller pool these two uses clash.
How it compares with the sizes either side
| Size | Surface | 1.10 m panels | 1.50 m panels | Approval |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4×8 m | 32 m² | ~32 m³ | ~45 m³ | Small-scale |
| 4×10 m | 40 m² | ~40 m³ | ~56 m³ | Small-scale |
| 4×12 m | 48 m² | ~48 m³ | ~67 m³ | Small-scale |
The volumes correspond to a water level of about 1.0 m and 1.4 m. The 4×8 m pool suits a tighter garden, the 4×12 m pool suits you if swimming is the priority. All the dimensions are in the table of prefab pool sizes.
Skimmer or overflow at 40 m²
A skimmer does its job properly at this size, together with the compact plant room that the small-scale works approval requires. An overflow pool with an overflow channel is worth considering if many people often swim together: the water spills over the whole perimeter, so the surface stays clean even when the pool is busy, and the water comes up level with the paving. It does, however, add an overflow grating all round and a balance tank, which have to fit into the plan.
The space around it: a layout for groups
- Paving about 1.2 m wide on three sides and about 1.5 m on the side where people sit on the edge.
- A lounger zone 2.5–3 m deep running lengthways, for five or six loungers with small side tables in between.
- Shade on the short side by the steps, so whoever is watching the children can sit somewhere cool.
- A shower at the entrance to the pool area and a self-closing gate if there are young children in the house; see pool safety for children.
- A compact plant room near one of the short sides, so the pipe runs stay short.
In total you need about 10×15 m of free space so that nothing feels cramped.

Questions
Is a 4×10 m pool enough for daily swimming?
For gentle daily exercise, yes: 10 m allows continuous swimming with frequent turns. If swimming is the main reason, the long, narrow 4×12 m gives more length with the same approval procedure.
Can a 4×10 m pool have an overflow and still stay under the small-scale approval?
The water surface stays at 40 m², but an overflow adds a perimeter channel and a balance tank. Your engineer will confirm, before the design is drawn up, whether everything together meets the conditions of the small-scale works approval.
