3 × 6 m pool: why so many people choose it for a small garden

A 3×6 m pool gives you 18 m² of water, about 18 m³ with 1.10 m panels or 25 m³ with 1.50 m panels. It fits in a long, narrow yard and leaves room for a few strokes.

What one extra metre changes

Compared with the 3×5 m pool, the extra metre of length changes how you use it: an adult can take a few proper strokes before turning, whereas the 3×5 is mainly for standing and playing. The surface, though, stays small, the excavation limited and the maintenance simple. That is why it is one of the sizes most often requested for small gardens.

Who it is for

  • A long, narrow plot about 7 m wide, where the pool runs along the fence.
  • Couples and families with one or two children who want a little swimming, not just a place to cool off.
  • People who want to exercise: with a counter-current swim system you swim continuously on the spot; whether it suits your pool is checked during the site survey.
  • A holiday home on an island, where the limited volume makes filling by water tanker truck more manageable.

Skimmer, approval and plant room

18 m² is well below the 50 m² limit. If the other conditions are also met, such as a depth of up to 1.5 m, a height of up to 1 m above natural ground level and a compact plant room, a small-scale works approval is enough. You will find the full list of conditions in a pool without a building permit.

Circulation is by skimmer. An overflow design is possible for looks, but it adds a channel around the water and a balance tank, which eat up space in a narrow garden.

A plan for a yard of about 7×13 m

A common scenario is the long, narrow back yard of a maisonette. One way to divide it:

  • The pool along one side, with about 1 m of paving around it: about 5×8 m in total.
  • Next to it, running lengthways, a strip of about 2 m for two loungers.
  • At the end nearest the house, about 3.5 m for a table under a pergola, looking out over the water.
  • At the far end, plants, a shower and the compact plant room, away from the bedrooms.

If you have a little more width, the 3.5×7 m pool gives noticeably roomier water. The table of prefab pool sizes gives you the full picture.

Questions

How many strokes can you swim in a 3×6 m pool?

For an adult, 6 m gives a few strokes before the turn, enough for relaxed swimming but not for training. For continuous swimming you need a counter-current system or a pool 8 m long or more.

A 3×6 m pool or a squarer 5×4 m?

The 3×6 m suits a long, narrow yard and gives more length for swimming. A squarer 5×4 m pool (20 m²) is better when lots of children play together; usually the shape of the yard decides.
