Prefab pools in Ioannina
Ioannina, built beside Lake Pamvotida and surrounded by mountains, has some of the highest rainfall of any Greek city, and cold winters.
Pools are built at detached houses around the city and at guesthouses and homes in the villages, from Zagori to Metsovo, where summer is cool and short.
What we watch for in Ioannina
- An outlet for rainwater: after many days of rain the water level rises. An overflow pipe connected to the stormwater drain keeps the water at the right level for the skimmer.
- Liner colour: in a cooler climate, a darker liner, grey or anthracite, absorbs more solar heat than a white or light blue one.
- Zagori and Metsovo: the villages are traditional settlements with strict rules on how structures look. The engineer checks what is allowed, and the pool is designed to blend with the stone and the garden.
Transport and construction
Materials are transported by road from Athens via the Ionia Odos motorway.

Questions
Which liner colour keeps the water warmest in Ioannina?
Darker colours, such as grey and anthracite, absorb more heat than light ones and give the water a deeper tone. Together with a cover at night, the water holds on to the day's warmth better.
