How to make your pool more private

Privacy starts with one question: where can people see you from? A tall fence hides the road, but not the second-floor balcony across the way. That is why you usually need a mix of fences, plants and cover from above.

First, map the sightlines

Stand where the water and the loungers will be, or sit on a chair at lounger height, and note where you can be seen from:

  • roads, pavements and entrances,
  • neighbouring gardens on the same level,
  • balconies and windows on higher floors,
  • houses on a slope above your plot.

Sightlines at the same level are blocked with vertical screens. Sightlines from above need cover overhead or trees with a broad canopy in the right line. If the pool has not been built yet, its position in the garden is the most effective tool: a few metres further over, behind the bulk of the house, can solve the problem without any extra screen.

Plants: the living screen

A hedge is the gentlest solution, as long as it is planted at the right distance from the edge, so leaves fall outside the water and roots stay away from pipework and pool walls. Choose evergreens that shed few leaves, with no thorns and not too many flowers that draw bees close to the water. If there are children or pets in the house, avoid toxic plants.

For an immediate result, large planters with tall plants give cover from day one and keep the roots under control. You will find which plants suit in plants around the pool.

Privacy without losing sun and air

The most common miscalculation is a tall wall on the south or west side that hides the neighbour but shades the water in the afternoon. The water stays colder and the area around it dries more slowly. Put the tall screens where the sightlines are and leave the side the sun comes from open.

  • Visibility from the house: hide from the neighbours, not from your own kitchen. If there are children, the pool must be visible from inside. A privacy screen does not replace a safety fence.
  • At night: a lit pool can be seen from far away. Low light aimed downwards keeps the atmosphere without exposing you.
  • Sound: a dense hedge softens voices, and a well-placed plant room bothers nobody. More in your pool and the neighbours.

Questions

How tall can the fence on the property boundary be?

The permitted height and the way it is built on the boundary depend on the local building rules, so your engineer will confirm them. Often the solution is a lower fence on the boundary and taller plants or panels further inside the plot.

What can I do if I am overlooked from a higher balcony?

A fence does not help here. You need cover from above, such as a pergola, a shade sail or a large umbrella over the loungers, or a tree with a broad canopy in the line of sight.
